The Role and Why It's Important Our Checker/Stockers keep the store running on two fronts at once, serving customers at the register and making sure shelves are stocked and ready for the next shopper. In this role, you'll handle everything from processing transactions and bagging groceries to unloading product and rotating merchandise. What You'll Do • Provide prompt, friendly customer service by greeting customers with a smile, learning their names, and going out of your way to make every visit a great one • Operate the cash register accurately, scanning product and processing all payment types including cash, checks, credit cards, coupons, food stamps, WIC checks, rain checks, in-store charges, and lottery transactions • Count back change, issue receipts, and provide cash refunds or credit memorandums for returned merchandise as needed • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines regarding WIC, food stamps, and the sale of tobacco, liquor, and lottery tickets • Place merchandise in bags or boxes, assist courtesy personnel, and support drive-up and carry-out service • Unload product, open containers, stock shelves, and rotate product to ensure freshness and proper presentation • Stock, face, and rotate merchandise, clean shelves, understand shelf tags, and take customers to items when requested • Stay knowledgeable of item look-up numbers, department numbers, item features, and weekly ad price changes and sale items • Keep the register area clean, ensure adequate supplies are available, and report improper cash levels in the cash drawer • Verify register balances at the beginning and end of each shift where applicable • Communicate clearly on the intercom or telephone and answer customer questions, following up with appropriate personnel as needed • Stay aware of your surroundings to support store safety and security • Assist store management with displays and decorations for special promotions and events as needed • Assist in other areas of the store as needed and take on special projects as assigned • Maintain strict adherence to personal hygiene, dress standards, and all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines • Report to work when scheduled and on time Your Skills • Follow detailed written or verbal instructions and work through tasks with a few concrete variables • Perform arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages • Understand and follow verbal or demonstrated directions and communicate supply needs orally or in writing • Work effectively as part of a team to deliver a great customer experience Reporting Relationships Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of GM, Perishables, and Store Operations; Service Managers Education and Experience • No education or experience requirements; we will provide all the training you need to succeed Physical Requirements • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 100 pounds or more, with or without mechanical assistance • Continuously stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods • Where applicable to the role: ability to operate pallet jacks, forklifts, or similar material-handling equipment (required operator certification must be completed prior to independent use) • Work in cooler or freezer environments for extended periods • Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades to cut, trim, or grind product • Where applicable to the role, and in accordance with applicable age and legal requirements: operate a cardboard baler or compactor • Where applicable to the role: perform repetitive motions associated with dough mixing, scaling, and proofing • Ability to unload, lift, stock, and rotate incoming truck freight and merchandise Working Environment This is a fast-paced role in a retail store environment where you will be on your feet throughout your shift. You will have daily exposure to dirt, noise, equipment movement hazards, and cleaning chemicals or solvents, with occasional exposure to temperature extremes, dampness, and potential electrical hazards.
