JOB FUNCTION: Under the direct supervision of the Circulation Supervisor, the Circulation Assistant provides friendly, efficient, and accurate customer service at the library's front desk. This position performs a variety of routine circulation, clerical, and technology-related tasks, including checking materials in and out, assisting patrons with library resources and equipment, and maintaining the organization and appearance of the collection and public areas. The Circulation Assistant supports the library's mission by creating a welcoming environment and ensuring a positive experience for all patrons. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are typical for this position, but dependent upon the level of skill, ability, and experience of the individual. They are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Customer Service and Circulation • Provides front-line customer service in person, by phone, and via email, answering general questions and assisting patrons with library accounts, materials, and services. • Checks materials in and out, processes holds, creates and updates customer accounts, and collects fees in accordance with library policies. • Maintains confidentiality of patron records and personal information. • Supports technology use by assisting patrons with public computers, e-readers, wireless printing, scanning, faxing, and copier functions. • Upholds library policies and procedures while providing courteous, professional assistance to patrons of all ages. Collection and Facility Support • Prepares, processes, and repairs materials for circulation. • Shelves returned items and ensures collections are neat, orderly, and accessible. • Assists with opening and closing routines, cash handling, and daily operational procedures. • Performs light cleaning and organizational tasks to maintain an inviting and functional library environment. Team and Operational Support • Communicates effectively with coworkers and supervisors to support consistent service standards. • Assists with special projects and events as assigned. • Promotes a positive, team-oriented work environment and contributes to the overall library's goals. MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Entry Requirements and Skills • A high school diploma or GED is required; additional education or library experience is preferred. • Excellent customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills. • Organized, adaptable, and self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. • Ability to follow procedures and manage multiple tasks with frequent interruptions. • Proficiency with computers and common software applications; ability to assist patrons with basic technology use. • Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a positive, professional attitude. Physical Requirements / Essential Functions • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. • Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of library materials up to 50 pounds. • Frequent reaching, bending, stooping, and repetitive hand and wrist motions. • Visual and auditory ability to perform job functions and communicate effectively. Working Conditions • Work performed primarily in a busy, climate-controlled public library environment. • Frequent public interaction requiring patience, tact, and professionalism. • Schedule may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours based on library needs.
