Job description

Court Clerk The Court Clerk position is responsible for Criminal, Civil, Youth, Family, Traffic, Juvenile, Truancy, Wellness and Traditional Courts. The Court Clerk is responsible that work is performed with speed, accuracy and attention to detail. The Court Clerk performs a variety of technical clerical duties related to proceedings for the Tribal Court and Judicial Services Personnel. The Court Clerk is responsible for carrying out duties in accordance with specific and detailed instructions as to the procedures, methods and techniques to be used. This position requires independent judgement from time to time. Primary responsibilities are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform. This list of responsibilities is intended to be representative of the duties performed within this classification. The omission of a function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed if such duties relate to the position. • Adheres to the Clerk's Manual and follows all policies and procedures as set forth with speed, accuracy and attention to detail. • Prepares and examines pleadings or other documents ensuring they are complete. • Appropriately stamps pleadings or other documents handled through the clerk's office and forwards to assigned clerk or judge. • Assists litigants with proper pleadings and tribal law without giving legal advice. • Abides by the Nisqually Tribe's Confidentiality policy. • Performs clerical or technical services for Judicial services personnel. • Maintains case files. • Attends trainings as required by the Chief Court Clerk or Court Administrator. • Assists other clerks and performs their duties in their absence. • Assists in community projects as assigned by the Chief Court Clerk or Court Administrator. Minimum qualifications include a High School Diploma or GED, one (1) year of Court Clerk experience or two (2) years of legal/judicial secretarial experience. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy. Must be bondable. Must be able to pass a criminal background check and drug test. Competencies include knowledge of tribal court systems, tribal law, and legal terminology; knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment; knowledge of computer systems and software specifically Microsoft programs; ability to use basic arithmetic and make simple computations accurately; ability to craft written communication with proper grammar and punctuation; ability to communicate well orally and in writing; ability to work in stressful and/or potentially violent situations.
